These Old Fashion Iced Oatmeal Cookies are a homemade version of my favorite store bought cookie. Of course they are better homemade and the glaze is perfect! These will always be a hit.
We absolutely love those classic iced oatmeal cookies you get at the store but they are always just a little too hard for me. I like nice, soft cookies so I decided to make some those old fashion oatmeal cookies myself. I am so glad I did, these turned out perfect! Nice and chewy oatmeal cookies with just a hint of cinnamon and that perfect glaze.
These cookies are easy to make and always impress. No one can resist an old fashion oatmeal cookie! My mom loves oatmeal cookies and these get her seal of approval so you know they have to be good.
These cookies have all the elements to make the perfect oatmeal cookie. The cookies are tender, chewy, lightly spiced with cinnamon. They aren’t too hard but aren’t too soft. And the glaze really elevates them. The glaze is light and sweet and adds just the right amount of sweetness to take these cookies over the top.
These cookies travel well and are perfect for sending to loved ones, bringing to the bake sale, taking to a friend, serving at a get-together but of course we like making them just to keep in the cookie jar.

You sure can! I would freeze them in a single layer on a sheet pan first before storing them in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Can I skip the glaze?
While the glaze is really what makes them like those classic store-bought ones you can of course skip the glaze and still have a perfectly delicious oatmeal cookie.
Ingredients used
- Old Fashioned Oats – Of course you need oats! These get pulsed a bit to break them down finer.
- Flour – I just used all purpose
- Baking Powder – You need this to give the cookies a little lift.
- Cinnamon- Just a bit for flavoring. You can add more if you prefer.
- Salted Butter – I like to use salted butter so I don’t have to add additional salt.
- Sugar – You need granulated and brown sugar for this recipe.
- Brown Sugar – I use a light brown sugar but you can also use dark for a richer flavor.
- Vanilla Extract – For flavor, you can also use vanilla paste if you prefer.
- Eggs – Just regular large eggs are the best for this recipe.
- Powdered Sugar – You need for the glaze.
- Milk – To thin the glaze.
How to make Old Fashion Iced Oatmeal Cookies

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Place your oats in a food processor and pulse a few times. You are not looking to grind these fine, just making them a coarse mix.
- Add the oats, flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a large mixing bowl.
- In another bowl using an electric mixer cream the butter and both sugars until light and fluffy.
- Next fold in the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until combined.
- Take 1 1/2 tablespoons of dough and roll it into a ball.
- Place the cookie balls on a parchment lined baking sheet and press down lightly.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes.
- Remove from oven and cool completely on a cooling rack.
- For the glaze combine the powdered sugar, milk, and water.
- Dip the cookie tops into the glaze and place aside to set.
- Let the glaze harden about 10 minutes and serve!

- 2 cups flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 cup salted butter, softened
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 ½ tablespoons milk
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
