Costco Double Chocolate Muffins
If you’ve ever wandered through Costco and given in to that giant clamshell of double chocolate muffins, you know how dangerous they are. My kids beg for them and of course we cant say no!
Rich, moist, full of melty chocolate chips, and basically the size of your head, what’s not to love? Well, now you can skip the trip and make these right in your own kitchen.
These Costco-style double chocolate muffins are just as big, chocolatey, and indulgent as the ones from the store, but better because they’re homemade (and you know exactly what’s going in them), which I love!
This is one of those recipes I make almost weekly. It’s so simple to throw together, and the muffins keep great for breakfast, after-school snacks, or late-night chocolate cravings. The base is made with devil’s food cake mix and chocolate pudding for that extra rich texture, and a little cinnamon gives them that true Costco flavor. I love using jumbo muffin tins for that authentic bakery look, but you can absolutely make them regular size or even mini for lunchboxes.
These are honestly perfect for make-ahead breakfasts, bake sales, or freezer-friendly treats, and they’re always a hit with kids, husbands, and literally anyone!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
-
It’s better than the store-bought version – Seriously, the flavor and texture are spot on.
-
Big batch = big payoff – Make a dozen jumbo muffins with one bowl and one bake.
-
Great for freezing – These muffins hold up beautifully in the freezer.
-
Customizable – You can swap the chocolate mix, change up the chips, or even leave out the cinnamon if you want.
Ingredients
-
3 eggs: Help give structure and moisture to these big bakery-style muffins.
-
½ cup oil: Keeps the muffins rich and tender with that soft, moist crumb we love.
-
½ cup milk: Adds creaminess and balances the batter, any milk works here.
-
¼ cup water: Just a bit of added moisture to loosen the batter perfectly.
-
1 teaspoon vanilla: Adds a warm, cozy flavor that ties everything together.
-
1 cup plain Greek yogurt: Keeps these muffins dense and moist while adding a little protein punch. I always look for ways to sneak a little protein into my kids diet.
-
1 (15.25 oz) Devil’s food cake mix: The chocolatey base that makes this so easy, all the ingredients are already measured for you!
-
1 (3.9 oz) package instant chocolate fudge pudding mix: Gives the muffins that rich, moist texture you can’t get from scratch alone.
-
½ teaspoon cinnamon: The secret ingredient, adds depth and warmth that makes these taste just like Costco’s.
-
2½ cups semisweet chocolate chips (divided): Because double chocolate = double the chips. Stir some in and sprinkle more on top for that bakery look.
Ingredient Substitutions
-
Use regular chocolate pudding mix if you can’t find fudge
-
Swap in sour cream if you don’t have Greek yogurt
-
Leave out the cinnamon if you’re not a fan—but it’s what gives that Costco flavor!
-
You can use regular or mini muffin tins, just reduce the bake time accordingly

These muffins are also one of my favorite make-ahead freezer snacks. I bake them on a Sunday, cool completely, then wrap them individually in plastic wrap and freeze. Then I just toss one into a lunchbox or zap it in the microwave for a quick breakfast.
They’re also a great homemade gift idea! Wrap a few in a cellophane bag with a cute tag for teachers, neighbors, or new moms who need a chocolatey pick-me-up.
