What is the best ham for this Hawaiian fried rice recipe?
I like to just use diced up ham steaks or ham slices. You can also buy cubed up ham. I love using leftover spiral ham for this recipe. Now you can also skip the ham and use Spam. Spam is fabulous in this fried rice and so flavorful.
What should I serve this with?
This is a meal in itself, you have your veggies, meat and starch all together so you don’t need much with this. I usually just serve it with some sliced up cucumbers or a light salad.
Can I make this spicier?
You can add red pepper flakes or jalapenos to give this a kick.
What is the best rice for this?
Leftover rice is the best rice for fried rice, you want it to be cold when you go to make this fried rice. Cold, leftover rice is always the best for making fried rice with.
Ingredients used
- Diced ham- You can use cubed up ham slices or ham steak, cubed up ham, leftover ham or even diced up Spam.
- Bell peppers- I like to use the mini bell peppers in assorted colors to give this dish it’s pretty colors.
- Scallions- with the green and white diced and separated.
- Pineapple tidbits- You can also use fresh pineapple if you have that on hand.
- Eggs- You need a couple scrambled eggs in this fried rice.
- Butter- Salted or unsalted, whichever you prefer.
- Sesame oil- This adds great flavor to the rice.
- Lite soy sauce- I like to use low-sodium soy sauce so I can control the saltiness of the dish.
- Cooked rice- You want cooked, cooled rice over fresh rice. Leftover day-old rice is usually the best perfect texture for making perfect fried rice with. I do use white rice for this but brown rice could also work. Jasmine rice is actually really good in this dish as well.
