Can I use any beans?

Of course!! You do have to use the pork and beans as the base but you are more than welcome to substitute the any types of beans like black beans, navy beans, cannellini beans, pinto beans, lima beans, butter beans or your favorite ones. 

What should I serve this with?

This makes the perfect side dish for any cookout meal.  This goes great with burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, steak, rib, anything!

Can I make this more spicy?

You can add red pepper flakes, jalapenos, green chiles or sriracha to give this a kick. You can also add a little liquid smoke for a smoky flavor.

Ingredients used for this Hawaiian Baked Beans recipe

● Bacon, diced, cooked- Use your favorite bacon, you can even used precooked or microwave bacon
● Onion-  I like to use a red onion for this recipe
● Green bell pepper- I love the flavor of the green bell peppers but you can also use red or yellow.
● Pork and beans-  Again use your favorite brand but make sure to NOT drain them.
● Brown sugar- Gives these beans their sweetness.
● Garlic salt- This adds great flavor to the beans.
● Smoked paprika- Adds a bit of smoky flavor to the beans.
● Liquid smoke- This is optional, but it also adds a great smoky flavor to this dish. 
● BBQ sauce- Use your favorite bbq sauce.
● Crushed pineapple-drained.  You want to make sure to drain this good so your beans aren’t too watery. You can use pineapple chunks if you like but I prefer the texture of the crushed pineapple in this dish. 
● Scallions- for garnish.  These are optional and just for garnish but I really like the color and flavor these add.
● Pineapple rings- for garnish optional. You can also garnish with fresh pineapple.

How to make these Hawaiian Beans

 

  1. FULL RECIPE BELOW
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. In a large bowl combine the pork and beans, cooked bacon, red onion, bell pepper, brown sugar, garlic salt, smoked paprika, liquid smoke, bbq sauce and crushed pineapple.
  4. Toss to combine.
  5. Pour into a 9×13 baking dish.
  6. Bake for 1 ½ hours until bubbly and thickened.
  7. You can garnish with more bacon, scallions and pineapple rings at the 1 hour mark if you like.
  8. Serve!
  9. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.  You can also freeze these in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

  • ● 4 (15 ounce) cans pork and beans
  • ● 1 cup cooked, chopped bacon
  • ● Half a red onion, chopped
  • ● Small green bell pepper, chopped
  • ● ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ● 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • ● 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ● 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • ● ½ cup bbq sauce
  • ● 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
  • ● Scallions for garnish
  • ● Pineapple rings for garnish optional

Instructions

● I like to use green bell peppers in this dish but you can use red if
you like.
● You can also make these in the slow cooker and cook for 4-6 hours
on low.
