The Home Depot Hurricane Preparedness Workshop

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend! I had a lovely weekend, the hubs and I went to The Home Depot Hurricane Preparedness Workshop at our local Home Depot and even though we have both grown up around hurricanes we learned soo much new information and things we would have never thought of!
The event was set up under tents and were separated into stations you could visit which was so fun.
The first station we went to was manned by the Newport News Cert Team which is the Community Emergency Response Team which means emergency personnel train people in basic emergency skills so they can be helpful to their community in the case of an emergency like a hurricane since there will be an abundance of people needing assistance and traditional emergency personnel will be overwhelmed, that is where CERT members step in. We learned a lot from this booth, such as the importance of having an emergency contact outside of your state that you and other family members can contact in case of separation and inability to reach each other. We learned all about what to do with your pets in an emergency and what to expect when trying to shelter your pet during an emergency.
At the second booth we met some Home Depot employees and we learned all about generators and their importance in the event of a power outage but most importantly we learned how to properly operate and maintain your generator during an outage and safety precautions to take while operating your generator. At this booth we also learned the essentials you should have on hand for an evacuation from a hurricane or even just in the event of an emergency where we could lose power and running water. After being shown a number of supplies we would need, they demonstrated the genius way to package all your supplies in a large trashcan, they hold a lot, they are on wheels and in the case of an emergency the trashcan just be thrown into your car all packed and ready to go. I think this was such an amazing tip and I cannot wait to get my Hurri-CAN together for this storm season. After what I learned at that booth I feel very comfortable knowing exactly what I need to gather to help my family survive a hurricane.
The last booth we visited was the Red Cross booth and there we learned a lot about how to prepare for a hurricane and what we should do to prepare our family and pets and get them ready in case a hurricane strikes. They gave us great tips on how to prepare your little ones so they don’t get completely blindsided in a hurricane and simple tricks to make them more comfortable, like giving them a small responsibility to focus on to help them not be so frightened.
All in all this was great event and we learned so much. In addition to the booths, there was also music, food and even a raffle giveaway which made the workshop even more fun. We had a great time at the Home Depot Hurricane Workshop and I cannot thank them enough for hosting this great event!
