Can I bake the shells?

Yes! Instead of frying you can dip the tortillas in melted butter, then in the cinnamon sugar mixture and place them in a muffin tin upside, you want to place the shells in the upside-down muffin tin indents and bake until golden brown for 10-15 minutes on 350.

Can I use canned apple pie filling?

Sure!! To save time you can definitely use store-bought apple pie filling. Just grab a can of apple pie filling.  I would just cut up the apples into a smaller size.

Can I just use whipped topping or whipped cream?

Of course!  You can skip the cream cheese topping and just use a whipped cream like in a can, whipped topping like cool-whip or even a bit of homemade whipped cream using heavy cream.  These would also be delicious with some vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients used

  • Small flour tortillas-  I like to the use the street taco size tortillas.  The street taco flour tortillas are my go to.  Any small tortilla should work and you can use a round cookie cutter to cut circles out of larger tortillas if you like.
  • Oil for frying- Any neutral oil will work here, I like to use canola oil or vegetable oil.
  • Cinnamon sugar-  You can buy cinnamon sugar or mix up your own.
  • Apples- Any apple variety you like will work in this recipe. Use your favorite apples.
  • Ground cinnamon–  You need a little cinnamon for the apple pie filling.
  • Vanilla extract-  You could also use vanilla bean paste if you prefer.
  • Brown sugar- This sweetens the apple filling.
  • Caramel sauce- I find this with the ice cream toppings.
  • Butter-  You just need a little for the apple pie filling.  You can use salted butter or unsalted butter.
  • Cream cheese-  You want to make sure your cream cheese is softened.
  • Powdered sugar-  This helps make the base for the cream topping.
