Hey y’all! Are you excited yet! It’s holiday time!! I love, love, love the holidays! I plan for the holidays all year, writing down Christmas party plans in the morning over coffee and a bowl of hot cereal.
My family has strong Christmas traditions. We spend each Christmas crammed into my grandparents den with a fire roaring behind my Papa while he hands out the gifts and the children playing in the glow of their giant Christmas tree all decked out entirely in glass ornaments. When the presents have all been opened and you can’t see the floor for the crumbled paper and shiny bows the men can be found napping on the sofa while Christmas carols play on the TV.
It is then that us ladies head up to the kitchen to get dinner on the table. We set the table with ham and turkey and all the trimmings. Each year I like to bring a different appetizer, something new to bring to the holidays.
My husband and I also have a holiday tradition of going to Target during the holidays, getting some coffee and walking around doing a little Christmas shopping and picking out a new ornament. This year while doing our annual Target Christmas trip I noticed these Winter themed Quaker Oat canisters exclusively at Target and of course I had to pick one up!
When planning what I was going to bring to Christmas this year my mind kept going back to the Quaker Oats, and I knew I had to use them in my appetizer recipe. Then I remembered how yummy oatmeal is in meatballs and just like that the perfect holiday appetizer was born. Yummy meatballs made even more delicious with the addition of oatmeal smothered in a cranberry barbeque sauce sounded like the perfect holiday snack to me.
The meatballs come out perfect thanks to the addition of the oatmeal (plus the oatmeal helps the meatballs go further). The sauce is the perfect spin on that classic barbecue/grape jelly sauce, a little sweet, a little tangy, the right combination of flavors that everyone loves. A few pretzels as a skewer completed this festive dish. They were a hit!

Since they have oats in them they must be healthy, right? That means I can eat one or two, okay three extra and not feel guilty!

Why do you need the milk in there? Is there a substitute. I have Kosher friends who cannot combine dairy with meat. I just didn’t know what the purpose of the milk is. Thank you so much in advance for your answer.
The milk is what softens the oats and turns it into a binder. I am not sure but you could try substituting the milk for another liquid like beef broth. I have not done that so I cannot say if it will work or not.
