Whenever I need a dessert that’s guaranteed to wow a crowd without a ton of stress, I go straight for slab pies. They’ve got all the cozy nostalgia of a homemade pie, but baked in a sheet pan so you get big, generous slices that are perfect for parties, holidays, or just a family that really loves dessert (that would be mine).

This French Silk Slab Pie is my latest obsession, it’s everything we love about classic French Silk Pie but made easier and bigger. You get a buttery, flaky crust that’s baked golden brown, a creamy chocolate silk filling made with instant pudding and real whipped cream, and then it’s all topped with even more fluffy whipped cream and pretty chocolate curls. It looks like something from a bakery window, but the truth is, it’s so simple to pull together.

One of my favorite parts about slab pies is how practical they are. I don’t know about you, but with three kids, a husband, and usually a handful of extra friends around, a regular 9-inch pie just doesn’t cut it. Making French Silk in slab form means there’s plenty to go around, and serving it up in neat little squares or rectangles is so much easier than slicing a round pie that wants to collapse on the plate.

And let’s be honest, French Silk Pie just screams cozy indulgence. The silky chocolate filling is rich without being too heavy, and pairing it with homemade whipped cream makes every bite melt-in-your-mouth delicious. It’s the kind of dessert that looks fancy but feels approachable, and I love having a recipe like this in my back pocket when I want to impress without stressing.

So whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving, need a holiday potluck dessert, or just want to spoil your family with something decadent, this French Silk Slab Pie is going to be your new go-to chocolate pie recipe.

What Is French Silk Slab Pie?

French Silk Pie is traditionally a rich, chocolatey pie with a creamy filling and whipped topping. Instead of making it in a round pie pan, a slab pie is baked in a rectangular sheet pan. This makes it easier to serve a crowd and gives you nice, uniform slices.

Our version keeps things simple by using instant pudding for the base of the filling. It’s mixed with milk and folded together with freshly whipped cream, giving it that dreamy, silky texture. Spread over a crisp pie crust and topped with more whipped cream and chocolate curls, it’s truly a showstopper dessert with minimal effort.

How to Make French Silk Slab Pie

  1. Bake the crust – Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll out both crusts slightly and place into a 15×10 sheet pan. Crimp the edges, prick all over with a fork, and bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Cool completely.

  2. Make the whipped cream – Beat heavy whipping cream and sugar until stiff peaks form.

  3. Make the chocolate filling – In another bowl, beat pudding mix and milk until thick. Fold in 1 cup of the whipped cream until smooth.

  4. Assemble – Spread chocolate filling evenly over cooled crust. Top with remaining whipped cream.

  5. Garnish – Shave semisweet chocolate bar over the top.

  6. Chill & serve – Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to set before slicing.

Substitutions

  • Pie Crust – Use homemade crust or even a graham cracker crust if you prefer.

  • Pudding – Chocolate fudge or dark chocolate pudding mix works too.
