Every holiday season, there are a few recipes that I pull out year after year because they’re just too good not to share, and these Pecan Bourbon Balls are at the very top of that list. They’re rich, boozy, a little indulgent, and so festive when rolled in powdered sugar or sprinkles. If you’ve ever had a bourbon ball at a Christmas party, you know exactly why people go back for seconds.

I love making these because they require no baking (which is always a blessing when my oven is already working overtime with cookies and casseroles). They come together in about 20 minutes, chill to set, and are ready to serve or package up as homemade gifts. My family always jokes that these are the “grown-up cookies” of the holiday dessert table, and they’re not wrong, though you might find the adults hoarding them before the kids can even ask what they are!

I’ve been making these for years, and they’ve become one of those holiday traditions my family looks forward to every December. I’ll usually whip up a batch while the kids are decorating cookies, and of course they know these are “off-limits” since they’re boozy. My husband always sneaks one (or two) before they’ve even had a chance to chill, and I love packing them into little tins with ribbon for teachers, neighbors, or anyone I want to surprise with a homemade gift. They’re the kind of treat that feels fancy, but secretly couldn’t be easier.

Whether you’re looking for a festive sweet to serve at a holiday party, something different to bring to a cookie exchange, or a homemade gift that feels special, these bourbon balls always deliver.

What Are Pecan Bourbon Balls?

Pecan Bourbon Balls are bite-sized, no-bake holiday treats made with crushed vanilla wafers, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, pecans, and bourbon. The mixture is rolled into little balls and coated in powdered sugar, sprinkles, or even chocolate. They have a slightly boozy kick balanced by sweet cocoa and nutty pecans, making them the perfect adult-friendly dessert.

These originated as a Southern classic and have been a holiday staple for decades. Each bite is rich, slightly fudgy, and full of flavor.

  4. Form the balls: Roll the mixture into 1 to 1½-inch balls.

  5. Coat them: Roll each ball in powdered sugar, sprinkles, or jimmies until fully coated.

  6. Chill: Place the bourbon balls on the prepared tray and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to set.

  7. Serve: Enjoy straight from the fridge or pack them up in a festive tin for gifting.

Substitutions

  • Bourbon: Use rum, brandy, or even Irish cream for a different twist.

  • Nuts: Swap pecans for walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts.

  • Vanilla wafers: Graham crackers or digestive biscuits also work.

  • Corn syrup: Honey or maple syrup can be used instead.

  • Coatings: Cocoa powder, shredded coconut, or crushed nuts are fun alternatives.

Variations

  • Chocolate-dipped bourbon balls: Dip in melted chocolate and let harden for an indulgent finish.

  • Rum balls: A classic variation made with dark or spiced rum instead of bourbon.

  • Nut-free: Skip the pecans and add extra wafer crumbs for those with allergies.

  • Holiday sparkle: Roll in edible glitter sprinkles for a festive New Year’s Eve look.

  • Espresso kick: Stir in 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder for a mocha flavor.

Tips & Tricks

  • Toast the pecans: Toasting deepens the nutty flavor and makes the bourbon balls richer.

  • Make ahead: These actually taste better after a day or two, as the flavors meld.

  • Coating tip: Roll again in powdered sugar just before serving for the prettiest presentation.

  • Use gloves when rolling: Keeps your hands from getting sticky and helps form smooth balls.

  • Serve cold: These hold their shape best when kept chilled.
