When I first started teaching myself to cook, I scoffed at making pantry ingredients from scratch. Why bother? I had good options available at my local stores.
Then we moved to the middle of nowhere and I was ordering everything online. I decide to be brave and give a few recipes a try. After success with vegetable stock and granola bars, I was much more confident.
This vanilla extract? It’s so easy it’s barely a recipe. You literally pour the two ingredients together and stick them in the back of a cupboard. Like most homemade versions the flavor is much stronger and cleaner than its store bought counterpart. The ingredients are easy to get. (Don’t use the good vodka though-save that for your cocktails!) Vanilla beans can be pricy but I often stumble on them in places like World Market or Farmer’s markets or Co-ops and the prices are way better than what you see in the grocery store.
Make this and you’ll never buy vanilla extract in the grocery store again.
I dare you.

I have always wanted to try to make my own vanilla extract! Have you ever figured out if it is more cost effective to make your own, compared to buying?? I’m sure the quality is better, but it would be awesome if it were cheaper per oz! Thanks for sharing :)

You know, I have heard of this and never tried it! I bet it is really good extract! Thanks for posting!
How cool! I want to try this :)
Great reminder of a recipe I have been meaning to do for a while. This will come in handy for the upcoming baking season. Also would make a great gift!

I’ve thought about making my own vanilla extract as well…but I wonder, the alcohol content vs homemade and store bought? It just seems like it would be higher? I don’t know though, lol. Thanks for sharing on Foodie Friday
