Are you growing tomatoes this year? This will be my fifth year growing tomatoes and I’m making big ole’ tomato jam plans. If you’re unfamiliar with this savory jam, think of it as a fancy ketchup substitute. You can certainly make my favorite summer condiment with store bought tomatoes. I just got a whole box of campari tomatoes for $1.99. After they sat on the counter and totally forgotten about for days, it was the perfect time to make [it’s not quite summer time yet] tomato jam…

tomato jam recipe

leeks for tomato jam

homemade tomato jam

  • 8-10 good sized tomatoes, chopped
  • half of an onion or 1 leek, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2-3 tbs rosemary, chopped
  • red pepper flakes to taste
  • salt
  • 1/4 C olive oil

1. In a heavy pot heat the olive oil.

2. Add leeks or onions, garlic, rosemary, and pepper flakes.

3. Add chopped tomatoes and season with salt.

4. Reduce heat to medium and cook until the juices are released, about 15-20 minutes.

5. Put it in a jar, store the jam in the fridge.

The best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever made was bacon, egg, cheddar, and tomato jam on a 7Up biscuit. It was seriously divine…

Reasons you should make tomato jam:

  1. The recipe takes less an 30 minutes.
  2. Having homemade condiments in your fridge adds originality to any recipe.
  3. It tastes better than ketchup.
  4. You know all of the ingredients that went into it. No corn syrup or preservatives here!
  5. It’s a good toast spreading option for those “savory only” people.
  6. Tomato jam makes you smart, efficient, and a true gourmand.

A note for bloggers.

If you were one of the earliest readers of AW2SL you might vaguely remember that embarrassing old tomato jam post. It was one of my first food posts that I had ever made. I was so proud of it at the time… This old cringe worthy post is a testament to the fact that if you invest in yourself, the posts you write will only get better. Take new photos or rescue the only dingy ones with a fresh session in Photoshop or any other photo editing software. Everything is worth a second look no matter how good you thought it was!
